One of my favourite kid-friendly recipes is one my mom used to make me and my siblings when we were kids. We called it The Banana Shake. It was creamy, sweet and delicious. All she did was blend frozen chunks of over-ripe banana with milk. Easy peasy. I like to make The Banana Shake for my kids, too, but I’ve improvised a little on the original:
The Banana Shake:
Break two frozen ripe bananas into chunks and throw into a blender with a teaspoon of ground flax seed and 1.5 cups of either almond or regular milk. I have a Vitamix and I blend on the “smoothie” setting. Any other kind of food processor or blender will do the trick! Blend until smooth but thick, or about 45 seconds. Makes two smoothies.
Shake it up: To make what I call The Hulk Shake, add half a cup of frozen or fresh spinach to the original recipe for a green superhero blend. One of my kids loves it, the other prefers the vintage version!
Tip: Don’t throw out your blackened bananas! Peel them, break them in half, and freeze in a freezer bag to make shakes and smoothies on demand!
