Our award-winning blog project, “I bet we can find 1,000 ways to be a family” does just that. We share the first-person stories of your unique families. Click here to email us with a photo of your crew and approximately 750+ words about what life with kids is like for you. Whether you parent with a partner, extended family member, friends you can’t live without or on your own—or define your family without children—we want to hear from you. Here are the families who have shared their stories so far.

Brandie Weikle

The New Family is run by long-time parenting editor, writer and spokesperson, Brandie Weikle. Former editor-in-chief of Canadian Family magazine, Brandie has also been the parenting and relationships editor for the Toronto Star, founding editor of two Toronto Star websites, and an editor for Today’s Parent. She writes a column called Modern Family for the Toronto Star, and is working on a book called The Ex Next Door: How a New Generation of Parents is Redefining Life After Divorce. Brandie is a single mother of two in Toronto and a frequent television and radio guest on parenting topics. She also does speaking engagements on the topic of positive co-parenting, provides one-on-one divorce coaching and is the leader of a lively international Facebook Community called Positive Co-Parenting After Divorce. You can contact her here.

The idea for The New Family stems from Brandie’s own experience as part of a non-traditional family. She is amicably divorced and lives next door to the father of her children and his wife (join our private Facebook group Positive Co-Parenting After Divorce). While The New Family is about so much more than just family diversity, this website is differentiated by a voice that doesn’t assume families are comprised of one mom, one dad and two kids, and that mom is the primarily caregiver.

The New Family has been humbled to receive a Gold at the Canadian Online Publishing Award for Best Blog in 2015, as well as a Silver for Independent Publisher of the Year. In 2016 we snagged three nominations and a Silver for Best Podcast. The New Family has been featured in the Toronto Star, on CBC Radio, The Huffington Post and others, as well as on numerous podcasts.

You can subscribe to the podcast on iTunes, Sound Cloud and Stitcher Radio, as well as through RSS and LibSyn.

The New Family partners with top-notch organizations and brands on content initiatives ranging from sponsored posts and giveaways to fully integrated custom sponsorship packages including ad rolls on The New Family Podcast, sponsored social, newsletters and more. Brandie also works as a brand ambassador and event host. Click here to request a rate card.

I really LOVE this project, and I’d really like to contribute with a picture of my own, but the link only allows you to use outlook express, which for whatever reason, my computer has a lot of trouble managing. Is there any other way?

What a great idea the #1000families project is! I chat with parents and grandparents everyday who feel badly that their family doesn’t fit the “two kids, two straight parents, and one dog” model and yet they are giving their kids a genuine, supportive and loving place to grow up.

    Hey Brandie,

Nice to “meet” you~! I’m a colleague of your mom’s, and she suggested I contact you re: My Family. You can read about my story on my blog, or if you like check out this one post which my upcoming TEDx talk is based on. If you enjoy what you see, please let me know if you’d like me to contribute to your project, it would be my pleasure.

A major part of my mission is to connect with really interesting, cool people; and so far I’ve met some that you might be interested in as well. Check out the blogs http://enlightenedglobetrekker.com and http://www.twelveintwelve.org – Crystal Blue and J.D. Lewis are good friends that have very, very unique and inspiring stories. Take a look and perhaps we can connect everyone.

Thanks Brandie, and I’ll look forward to hearing back from you soon. David

    Hi Brandie:
Kate (my wife) and I have recently written a parenting book: “Great Parenting Skills (GPS) for Navigating Your Kid’s Personality”, published in Toronto by Career Life/Skills Resources (www.clsr.ca). Our book has been very well received, we have workshopped it throughout Ontario and in Miami Florida (international psychology conference), and have been on a number of American radio shows discussing the book. The premise is that you parent to your child’s personality, and we go into detail about the four dominant personality types as well as introversion and extraversion. We would very much like to talk to you about being on one of your podcasts. Our website is http://www.skills4people.com, and Kate can be reached at 905-825-1456. Look forward to connecting.
